Best Place to Sleep 2007~2012

The work is a guerrilla-style performance in which Yamaoka slept for a short while in some authoritative place, a steps, at Christmas, and in some banks, especially ATMs. Photographs and videos of the recordings are also part of the piece. She started this performance when she visited the palace of the founder of a large company called Krupp in Essen, Germany, and it grew out of another piece called “Missing in Yokohama”. The concept of “Missing in Yokohama” was about questions of identity and how a fictional person, traveling in search of a place to belong, would behave in a public space.” Best Place to Sleep” took place in Japan, Thailand, Germany, the United States, Poland, Zagreb and other countries during the two years from 2007. Some of them were introduced in Taiwan in 2018 and in Berlin in 2021. It also eventually evolved into the other performance called “Come with Me” performed with some audience.

banks are place sof private companies. They contain our savings, but they also contain our taxes. So, we can use a little bit of space and time ? It might be a delusional idea that at least a piece of tile on the floor should be my place, mightn’t it?  The idea is based on the contradiction/question from the nature’s point of view that most of the space in this wide world is supposed to belong to some human being. All of Yamaoka’s works in public spaces are an demonstration of anarchistic attitude that tries to ignore the rules set by human society from the bottom up. It is powerlessness.

Yamaoka has lived in 15 different towns, including Sapporo, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Takamatsu, Saitama, Nagano, Tokyo, and Chiba, as she has moved around a lot since she was a child due to his father’s work. In addition, She started performance art and have traveled to 22 countries. She ended up living in Saitama Prefecture, but she felt that she had little relationship with her hometown and it was not her base. Meanwhile,  she was thinking that someday, surely, she must find her “destined” place to live somewhere. However, around 2007, when she was 45 years old, she finally realized that there was no such place. Feeling mildly desperate, she began to think that paradoxically, it doesn’t matter where she sleep, anywhere is the best place to sleep. She thought it took many actions of telling her body to give up hope because she had been seeking it for so long, for so many years. Thus, this performances were done for a very personal purpose.
