1997〜1998年ごろには、1日に何枚も絵を描いていた。机の上で描ける小さな絵だ。映画のシーンや、歴史上の絵画の片隅の人々の姿を、スケッチした。中には、それから派生して、自分で思いついたイメージのものもある。でも、基本的には、わたしの中から出たものではなく、世界の文化の中にある人々の姿である。鉛筆で下書きをし、気に入ったら、用意した黄色で塗られた和紙に、特殊なペンの形をした焼きごてを使い、それらを清書した( pyrography )。 黄色の色は、最も、線を生かして見える色、と、小学生に時に習った。交通標識がそうであるように。
Around 1997-1998, I used to draw several pictures a day. They were small pictures that I could draw on my desk. I sketched scenes from films and people in the corners of art books containing historical paintings. Some of the images were derived from these, some were my own ideas. But basically they are not from my own mind, they are the images of people in the world culture. I drafted them in pencil, and when I liked them, I drawn them with a kind of burned pencil ( pyrography )on yellow-painted Japanese paper that I had prepared. I learned in primary school that yellow is the colour that makes the best use of lines. Just like traffic signs.
